This is it!
After pondering this for months over months, I actually started building Stride - an MMORPG with an ambitious and not yet exhaustive list of goals I've always wanted to play.
I'm a huge fan of pixelart games, RPG, online social platforms - but also software engineering, architecture, realtime network communication, and data management. These preferences come together as this project; a game I've been building quietly for some time now and am happy to share here.
Stride is a client/server architecture (authoritative server, zero-trust client architecture) that is made for letting hundreds (or maybe thousands? who knows!) of players play in the same spot. Stride's world is virtually infinite in all directions and is designed to grow over time. Player interaction with each other and the environment are first class citizens, and the world is supposed to "feel alive". I'm not quite at that point yet but that's where this is headed (I hope).
Right now I'll just document progress here and provide screenshots of what works. A server is up and running, and I'm actively testing the game client there. All the hard parts of server deployment, secure communication, extensible backend data management, admin UI, etc. work correctly. At some point I'll make a game client available for download once things are stable enough.
